Cows?
I thought this was a "Monkees" discussion!

        "See that herd of cows?"
"Of course, I've heard of cows ... "

        Not like this, you haven't!!!!!

Well, folks ... in the inimitable ways of our slightly wacky newsgroup/mailing list, we have once again uncovered some heretofore unknown facts about the songs of our favorite quartet. Most notably, those done by the tall Texan-cum-New Mexican, nez!

So, close all the doors and windows (you don't really want anyone to hear you laughing this loudly!), turn the oxygen tank on high, keep your arms and legs inside this page until the subject comes to a full and complete stop (which may be never!), and hang on as we bring you ...

        THE COW-SPIRACY!!!!!

        Questions, Questions, Questions ...

The innocent inquiry ... and the shocking results!
            Remarkable discoveries!
            Sing Along!
            Not the others, TOO!
            There's more?
            What's next?

        Startling New Developments!

            The Evidence!!!
            Gosh Meets Frodis!
            A Special Surprise!
            A New Album!
            But WAIT ... there's MORE!

Where in the wide, wide, world of sports did you ever come up with this ... for lack of a better word ... STUFF?

It seems that in early May 1995, an innocent (?) reader of the alt.music.monkees newsgroup stated "I'd heard that nez's song "Joanne" was really about a cow. Can anyone confirm this?" Taking this request to herd ... ummm ... I meant HEART, David set off to find the answer. His research uncovered the following song titles penned by our Texan hero:

        • Crippled Bovine
        • Little Red Udder
        • Beyond The Blue Holstein
        • Hereford 99 With Melange
        • Cow-lico Girlfriend
        • Silver Moo
        • Nine Times Belgian Blue

Never being one to turn down the chance to "beef up" knowledge of the origin of songs, Zan delved more deeply and uncovered the following titles. Some of these date back to nez's involvement with the Monkees:

        • Casablanca MOOnlight
        • You Told Moo
        • Moo Over the Rio Grande
        • Harmoony Constant
        • Nine Times Moo
        • Michigan Buttermilk
        • Papa Guernsey's Moos
        • Some of Elsie's Moos

Being raised on a ranch, our resident expert on cattle -- tami -- joined the research team. Her knowledge, and unquenchable thirst for the truth, led to the discovery of these songs:

        • Some of Charolais Blues
        • Taurus Amore
        • Thanx For The Ride
        • Artificial Insemination and Me
        • Texas Fever
        • You Are My Cow
        • I Looked Away (and stepped in a big pile of %@#&)
        • Wax My Newt (oops, wrong obsession)
        • Cow Mane and Bowling
        • Begin the Bovine
        • Cow . . . (If you listen closely, you will hear "voices" saying "You are my cow. You are my cow. You are my cow. Cow.")
        • . . . For The Texan
        • I Am Not Steak
        • Twighlight On The Trail (A man and his cow, clippity clopping into the sunset)

Being intruiged by the "meat" of the matter, our resident teacher, Eva, began pouring over the massive amounts of literature, uncovering the following connections:

        • Moonolia Sims
        • Sweet Young Heifer
        • Yellow Buttermilk

The word of the conspiracy has reached beyond the borders of the USA! Laurie requested to join the research team, and based on her newest discovery, was accepted:

        • Some Of Belgian Blues

        Back to the topics!

So, you found a couple of songs that refer to cattle. So what? After all, nez is from Texas!

Very true, very true! However, the diligence of our research team has been rewarded by the following remarkable discoveries. Not only did nez write solo songs dedicated to this subject, his influence can be found in a host of songs recorded by the group in the late 60s. The evidence presented is properly branded according to the researcher who uncovered these ties:

        David's discoveries:

        • Longhorn Title: Do I Have To Moo This All Over Again
        • Early Morning Chew Some Greens
        • Randy's Cows Git
        • Cowlisle Wheeling
        • You Hold Me (And Your Hands Are Cold)
        • Love Is Only Milking
        • What Am I Doing Hanging Round The Pasture?
        • Look Out (Here Comes The Farmer)
        • Cud-eating Toy

        Zan's findings:

        • Don't Moo on Me
        • While I Moo
        • Hold On, Bull
        • Love is Only Grazing
        • Through the Pasture Gate (a tender song about longing for freedom)
        • The Kind of Bull I Could Love
        • Milk
        • Let's Moo-ve On
        • Do It In the Name of Milk
        • Little Heifer
        • Ranch Song
        • I'll Chew My Cud with You
        • The Bull I Let Behind Me
        • The Last Grain in Clarksville
        • Pasture Valley, Someday (a bovine's dream of the future)
        • She Hangs Low (a sad story of a cow who missed a milking)
        • My Share of the Pasture

        tami's tenderings:
**These were banned for obvious reasons:

        • I'm A Beef Eater
        • Sweet Young Veal

**These made it through, but strike fear in every bovine's heart:

        • Gravy
        • Tapioca Tundra

**This list captures the less frightening side of the fixation:

        • This Just Doesn't Seem To Be My Hay
        • I Can't Get Hereford Off My Mind
        • A Man Without A Holstein
        • Shorthorn Blackwell
        • Good Clean Barn
        • (Theme From) The MOOnkees
        • Daily Nightly (The Milking Song)
        • Looking For The Longhorns
        • If I Moo
        • Semen Collector
        • Beef Beef Baby Beef Beef
        • Midnight Grain
        • 999 Pounds

        Eva's evocations:

        • I Wanna Beef Free
        • Tomoorow's Gonna Be Another Day (Hay Hay Hay Hay)
        • I'm A Bulleever
        • Take Giant Step Outside Your Barn
        • Gonna Buy Me A Cow
        • Anykine, Anyplace, Anywhere
        • A Man Without A Herd
        • Hides of Gray
        • Circle Brand
        • Tear The Horns Right Off My Head
        • Your Auntie Moozelda
        • A Little Bit Beef And A Little Bit Ewe (a tune about a cross-species relationship)
        • Randy's Cows...GIT!! (Alderney Title)
        • St. Mathmoo
        • For Elsie's Sake (rejected Borden's jingle)
        • You Sold Me (cow's reprimand to the owner that out her on the block)

With the mounting cause to suspect a conspiracy, the research team rounded up more experts in the field. With their help, further connections came to light:

        Melhi's musings:

        • Every Step Of The Whey
        • Cream World
        • Angus Moonicipal Cow
        • Peter Percival Pasteur's Pet Cow Corky
        • You Aren't Really Lowing At All
        • That Was Hen, This Is Cow
        • Steer Cowlector
        • And the rarely seen album -- Livestock 1967

        Kymberlee continues:

        • Star Cow-lector

        Bob's basic idea:

        • Hay, hay, we're the Monkees.....

        Brenda's beginnings:

        • Shorty Blackbull
        • C.O.W Washburn
        • Forget That Guernsey
        • I Won't Be The Same Without Heifer
        • Dairy, Dairy
        • Cheese Hangs Out
        • This Just Doesn't Seem To Be My Hay (a confused yet inquiring cow)

        Back to the topics!

So ... you found song titles. Anyone can make up song titles! Care to substantiate your findings?

OK, you asked for it! Our diligent research team found these songsheets stashed in old milk bottles hidden under a bale of hay on a remote farm (the location of which shall remain secret until the appropriate time). Care to sing along to the moosic? And if those weren't enough, here's more lyrics to moo along with. Wait! There's MORE!!!!!!!

        Back to the topics!

OK ... but what about the solo works by the others? Surely they aren't a part of this "conspiracy" as well.

Don't bet the farm on that one! Here are just a few instances that indicate this is more than just a coincidence:

        Eva finds:
        ******************** PETER SOLO ********************

        • MGB-GT (My Guernsey Bull---Grand Taurus)
        • Mooricle
        • Tender Is The Ribs
        • Milkshake
        • Good Milker (a tribute to a contest-winning cow)
        • Ladu Moodonna
        • Rustlers (later changed to PIRATES for legal reasons)
        • All (Milk)Shook Up & Blue Suede Moos (a tribute to Cowvis Presley)
        • Since You Brought the Hay
        • I Truly Udderstand
        • Foggy, Foggy Moo (about a rather syre-headed cow)
        • You Can't Moo That! (censorship in the pasture)
        • Moocille (a tribute to Chuckroast Berry)

        Melhi manages to uncover:
        *********************MICKY SOLO**********************
From Milky Dolenz Puts You To Sleep (Beware of Vets album):

        • Black Angus
        • Cow on the Hill
        • St. Judy's Cow met (St. Mattew's Bull)
        • Heffer Mountin' (sung from the bull's perspective)

        Zan followed leads to find:

        • Hippy Hippy Milkshake (performed by Davy)
More evaluation is being done at the present time.

        Back to the topics!

Alright! I'm a Believer! Have you found any further evidence?

        Resident cattle expert tami responds:

        More little known facts:
The Prison was actually an expose of the horrors of the modern feedlot.

"Cow Parts", the original name of Nez's 1980 comedy video, was rejected as being a much too obvious reference to the meat-packing industry. "Elephant" seemed a little more subtle, and funnier, too. After all, parts is parts ...

After checking with her best source, Zan reveals:

A couple of solo songs were recently discovered:
Only Branded (the Beef Council never let this song past nez's writing desk. The terrors of the round-up and subsequent ritualistic branding of unsuspecting cattle are vividly documented here.)

The Udder Room (this song was quickly confiscated by the Milk Council because it fully exposed the horrors of the modern automated milking machines ... only rare home-recorded tracks exist to this day.)

        Researcher Melhi remembers:

Wasn't "Gonna buy me a Cow" changed to "Gonna buy me a Dogie" before it was shortened to "Dog"?

Using state of the art 19th century technology, I was able to uncover still more clues to the Monkees/cow connection. (Perhaps some of you have herd these before?)

        • On the back of HindQuarters, there is a picture of Hank Cicowlo with Cow Chip Douglass.

        • Over 400 responses to Cowlumbia's open cattle call have been narrowed down to four... the cream of the crop.
          • Gravy Jones (known for his work in Cow-liver on Broadwhey),
          • Breeder Tork,
          • My Cow Nesmith (folk singer Cow Bell Blessing) and
          • Milky Dolenz (former child actor Milky Paddock)
will portray The Mookows, a struggling moosical group.

        • Didn't Mike do his screen test on the set of "The Farmer's Daughter"? (Zan interjects -- "So did Davy!")

        • Elephant Parts: When Mike is translating the Spanish song, the first line is: The cattle graze in the peaceful field.

        • This line is taken straight from the TV episode "Some Milk It Lukewarm" "...and now from the elegant pump room of the magnificent porter-house high over Chicowgo asking that moosical question..."

One of our newer recruits, Nez-Head Rob, has unearthed another clue:

On a lighter note, I've discovered yet another clue to the mysterious bovine fascination.
While perusing "Monkeemania" last night, the following quote jumped out - "The first Monkees concert tour commenced. Kicking off in Denver on 26 December it made its way through.....San Francisco, where the final concert was performed at the Cow Palace on 22 January".

He continues ... "There you have it, could this have cemented the cow fixation? Pretty soon, I'm going to start analyzing album covers for Mike is the Cow clues and write my thesis on that."

And yet more "......I heard that if you play "Writing Wrongs" backwards at 78 rpm, you can hear Peter saying "Turn me on Cow Man, drink milk, drink milk, drink milk.""

Our resident archaeologist, randy, splices together the following minute pieces of information to show the depth to which the conspiracy has sunken:

        first clue:
Nez and frank zappa apeared together in the series then Zappa appeared in HEAD with a cow.

        second clue:
In the Vacuum cleaner scene, Peter climbs on mike's shoulder then later lands on the back of the cow!!!!

Perusing the vaults of celluloid, Eva has uncovered these bits:

        MONKEES ON THE HIGH SEAS....
(When about to walk the plank):
CAPT: All right....which one of you impersonated the parrot?
        PETER: Not me...I can't even do a good cow....moo?

        GIFT HORSE:
(As he sets off to begin milking)
MIKE: Guess I'd better go warn the cow....

        And, from Peter at VV.....
"We'll get you lined up like the cattle you are...."

        Back to the topics!

        Other connections?

While the greater portion of the evidence points to the cow-connection, other species have been mentioned. Below are just a few of those discovered during the course of this research.

        Other Barnyard References:

        • Ewe and I
        • I'll Spend My Life with Ewe
        • Ewe Just May be the One
        • Me Without Ewe
        • Since I Fell in Love with Ewe (performed live by Micky at a concert last August)

        So, what's next?

We welcome any contributions from those brave souls who would search for clues. If you find any pertinent information that will help us teach the truth to the masses, email Zan with all the facts you can find. This includes lyrics, concert facts, moments from the series, personal appearances, as well as song titles. Leave no cud unchewed . We will post information here as it is dated, catalogued, and verified.

Also be on the lookout for misplaced (on purpose?) artwork depicting this bovine preoccupation (like the album cover seen here). Our research team has found some other as-yet unidentifiable pieces. We will include these works as their meaning and association with this project becomes clear. (Translation: When we find the right pictures to go along with this nonsense, we'll post 'em! )

        A New Album!

Word of the cowspiracy has spread around the globe! From across the Pond, Mystic Green (aka amx) has discovered that the group released a new album in late 1996! The name of the album just about says it all ... "Milkus" ... (editor's note: read into that what you will). Some of the tracks featured are:
        • Moo and I
        • Oh, What A Pint
        • Admiral Milk
        • I Believe Moo
        • It's Not Moo Late

And on a somewhat related note ... February of 1997 saw the group release their first television special in almost 30 years. Several songs from "Milkus" were featured as video segments in the special, including "Moo and I". Our friend Mystic points out that a special message was sent to those who are aware of the Cowspiracy at the beginning of the "Moo and I" video ... as the scene shifts a short but plaintive "Mooooooo" is heard just before the music starts.

        Believe what you will .......

        Back to the topics!

        But WAIT ... there's MORE!

We all know that the first claim to fame for this group was on the "small screen". It makes perfect sense then, that several of the episodes from the television series would point directly to the cowspiracy. Sandra offers these titles as on-going proof:
        • Your friendly neighborhood cownappers
        • MOOnkees vs the milking machine
        • I've got a little cow here.
        • Don't look a gift horse in the mouth (farmyard related)
        • The cow who came in from the cool (story of a cow who escaped the freezing works.)
        • One cow shy
        • Too many cows
        • MOOnkees Dairy tale
        • Kid of a Gypsy (story of a goat abandoned to gypsies at birth)
        • Case of the Mooing MOOnkee
        • I was a teenage MOOSter. (Story of a cow cross bred with a rooster)
        • MOOnkees in the ring (Exposing the horrors of Market)
        • Alias Milky Dolenz (story of a cow impersonating a human)
        • The MOOnkees get in more dirt. (Story of a cow who thinks he's a pig)
        • MOOnkees at the MOOvies
        • Hillbilly Honeymoon.

        We are NOT alone!

"I thought love was only true
        in dairy tales ..."

So, dear readers, until we "meat" again ...

MAY THE COWS BE WITH YOU!
